himym life lessons

I was watching an episode of HIMYM (How I Met Your Mother) that got me thinking. In this episode, Ted talks about a chain of events that happened and led to him to propose to his girlfriend, all starting from getting into this one specific cab and then getting into a car accident. Everything happens for a reason.

The writer Melanie Moushigian Koulouris puts it eloquently: "I'm a true believer that everything happens for a reason. Though you may not always understand why, I believe the most valuable lesson behind it is to make you stronger. Live in the moment, because that is all there is."

Though cliche, I am a firm believer in the idea that everything does indeed happen for a reason, whether I know it or not. I wonder though, do people believe this because it is the only thing most of us can hold onto when a situation may not turn out the way we want it to? It is only a coping mechanism to remain stable on our feet? Or do we believe this because we actually really do just believe it?

For me, the idea always just seemed common knowledge; I thought no differently, as this idea was ingrained in me since I was a child. Now that I think about it, I think it may be a mixture of both; it is both something I just believe in, as well as a coping mechanism. I don't necessarily tell myself this everyday in order to live - thats a little much - but I do think it that it helps me to live in the present and keep my head looking forward.

Sometimes I think about what my life would be like if I had not done this or done that. I've been told not to think about the what ifs because it is just a waste of my time, my brain, my stress, and my worries, but I cannot help but just let my imagination roll. I think a lot. That's just what I do!

Well, I've been thinking a lot about the past couple of years and all that has happened since then. I have had a wonderful 2 years at a beautiful college up in Washington where I have entered and exited as not a different person, but as a more confident and stronger person. I know that I was meant to be there, even if it were only for a short time. It is incredible how much I experienced in a such a short span; I went to Europe, went to China, joined a sorority, took on a plethora of jobs, did grassland ecology research, and the list goes on. Of course, almost everyday was a mountain to climb, with the millions things that needed to get done in such a short 24-hour day. Regardless of everything that I did there, it is the people whom I met and befriended that I will always cherish and never forget. I met my best friends there. If anything, I was meant to go to Whitman to meet my best friends.

And now, there is a reason that I am home. I'm happy to be with my family, who I have not seen too much of over the past couple years. There's a reason that I probably and most likely will transfer schools. There's a reason there was a small hiccup in my education. As a friend told me, I am lucky to get the chance to take a step back and reroute my path.

All that.. from HIMYM. It teaches great life lessons.
